Welcome to this week’s Favorite Food Friday where we share our favorite foods with our friends.   This week we head to Hollywood Studios to the Backlot Express.   If I was to say Worms in Dirt, not too many of you are picturing food and getting hungry, are you?    Well what if I added one more little word to that – “Cupcake” – yes folks I bring you the Worms in Dirt Cupcake!!!   Earth week was celebrated recently at Walt Disney World and as part of the celebration there were many great snacks to try.   These included the cupcake in our post along with a Worms and Dirt caramel apple and a worms and dirt tart.

Worms in Dirt Cupcake 1

Worms in Dirt Cupcake

The Worm in Dirt Cupcake was a chocolate cupcake filled with chocolate pudding and topped with dirt (cookie crumbs), sprinkles, a gummy worm, and a sugar flower pot.   Yes the flower pot was edible for that extra sugar buzz.    The cupcake itself was moist and tasted best when eaten with the pudding.   We ended up scraping most of the other sugary items to the side and only sampled them in the end.

Ride the Rails at Fort Wilderness

Ride the Rails at Fort Wilderness

All aboard, let’s take a train ride around Fort Wilderness.   As a kid we stayed at Fort Wilderness every year on our trip to Walt Disney World.    With only the Magic Kingdom to pass the time we spent a lot of time at the campground.   One of my favorite activities was to board the Fort Wilderness Railroad and just ride around.   For $1 you could ride all day, and believe me I got my money worth.

Map of Train at Fort Wilderness

The train ran through the entire area of Fort Wilderness at the time, but the best part was that it was the mode of transportation from the parking area to Pioneer Hall, such a better experience on your way to Hoop Dee Doo than the buses we have today.

The track was 3 ½ miles, over twice the length than what can be found at the Magic Kingdom and cost over $1 million dollars to build.   The trains were steam powered and were decorated in red, green, and gold colors.   Each train was about 115 feet long and could carry around 90 guests.

Fort Wilderness Train

We loved to ride the train, but they only were around for a few years.   They started operation in 1973 and closed in 1977.   Why such short lived, there are many thoughts around this.   The trains were often stranded on the tracks when they ran out of water or fuel.   The capacity of these trains for both was very limited causing refuels at each stop, if this was not done then the train would become stranded on the tracks.   The tracks themselves were either poorly built or due to the terrain shifting which lead to derailments.   On other thought which I experienced for sure was that the train ran from 7 am to 11 pm.   The tracks were not far from the campsites, so imagine a train whistle waking you up at 7 in the morning or trying to get your kids to bed at night.

Animal Kingdom at Night

Animal Kingdom at Night

The Animal Kingdom is an amazing park, we love to ride the Safari and see which animals are out and about at different times of the day. But what happens at night? Well you are about to find out as the Animal Kingdom has recently announced Harambe Nights and the Rivers of Light Nighttime Spectacular.

Harambe Nights

  •  Harambe Nights includes seating for a performance of The Lion King – Concert in the Wild, a welcome reception with food, live music, drinks (including wine and beer), special merchandise, character greetings, and to top it off a special finale. Harambe Nights does cost extra ($119 Adult and $79 children) and will only occur on certain nights this summer. Please consult Disney’s Website for dates and more information.

Rivers of Light Nighttime Spectacular

  • Rivers of Light Nighttime Spectacular – will be the first night time show at Animal Kingdom and will feature floating lanterns, water screens and animal imagery. The show will be in the larger body of water between Discovery Island and Expedition Everest.  Dates have yet to be announced on when this will begin.

Ok, I know what you are thinking. We will be parting it up but what about the safari animal, which brings us to today’s trivia….. Where do the Safari Animals go at night?

Wildlife Express Train 14

Did you know each of the animals have their own call to return to their nighttime enclosures? If you ride the Wildlife Express Train back to Conservation Station you will see some of their nighttime accommodations. All the animals are trained to a certain sound (bells, hands clapping, etc) that indicates that it is their time to return home. The animals are trained so well that the process only takes about 1 hour each night to get everyone tucked in for the night.   Simply amazing isn’t it?

Hidden Mickey Monday: The Great Movie Ride

Hidden Mickey Monday: The Great Movie Ride

Our Hidden Mickey this week comes from The Great Movie Ride at Disney’s Hollywood Studios.    My wife spotted this just as we were about to be robbed by the gangster.   I was way too busy trying to protect our valuables.   As the gangster boards your car, be sure to take a look to your left and to the back of the tram cars.
