Tiggerific Tuesday Trivia: Disney’s Polynesian Resort

Poly Outside

Did you know: Disney’s Polynesian Resort was one of only 2 hotels on property when Disney World opened in 1971. Both the Polynesian and Contemporary Hotels had their rooms constructed off site in a modular fashion and they were just slid or stacked into steel frames. This was done to help speed up the construction and limit the amount of contractors required to be onsite.Poly Rooms Outside

The Poly opened its doors on Oct 1, 1971 and is located on the south side of the Seven Seas Lagoon directly across from the Magic Kingdom. The resort today consists of 11 longhouses and includes 853 rooms.

Tiggerific Tuesday: Castaway Cay Landing Strip

Tiggerific Tuesday: Castaway Cay Landing Strip

Did you know?? Castaway Cay Sign

Disney’s private island Castaway Cay features an airplane landing strip.  Why is this here?   Was it added by Disney to add to the island’s story?   Nope, not at all.   You see mon, this island has a colorful history.   The island was called Gorda Cay and had many uses:  Pirates frequented the island in the 1700’s, farmers then used the island because of the fertile soil, and later drug smugglers discovered the island.   Yes, drug smugglers.   In the 1980’s the island was so overrun by these smugglers that property owners on the island were no longer welcome and would be run off by the smugglers with their guns and dogs.  Castaway Cay Landing Strip

Wow, but back to where the landing strip came from.   In the 1960’s a man by the name of Alvin Tucker owned around 150 acres of the island and he built the landing strip so that he could easily travel to his island getaway.    It was too bad that this landing strip made it very attractive to the smugglers.

Years later, Disney purchased the island and spent 1 ½ years along with $25 million dollars to turn 55 acres of the 1000 acres into an island paradise.   Today around 70 cast members live on the island maintaining everything for the cruise ships that stop throughout the week.   If you do get a chance to visit, be sure to stop by the post office and send off a postcard home with the Castaway Cay post mark!  Castaway Cay Post Office

Tiggerific Tuesday Trivia : It’s a Small World

Small World 1It’s a small world after all; It’s a small world after all.   I know you are singing it, and you can thank me later today when it pops back into your head.  Much thanks to the Sherman brothers for that.   Yes it’s a song to remember and a very cutesy ride that’s not to be missed.  It is a classic created in 1964 for the New York World’s fair in a Small World 2pavilion sponsored by Pepsi.  Hmm that’s odd you surely can’t find a Pepsi on property anymore.   The ride can be found at Disneyland, Disney World, Tokyo Disneyland, Disneyland Paris, and Hong Kong Disneyland.   Each attraction has close to 300 animated dolls, don’t believe me? Ask the dishes, or count them next time and let me know.

Small World 3As you ride the attraction, take a look in the water.   People from all over the world throw in money to make a wish each time they ride.  I once heard that the ride can contain around $100,000 in coins between cleanings.   How much do you think is in there?Small World 4
